An Australian Shepherd recovering from Myxosarcoma. Badger (or “Mr B”) is a 9 year old Aussie Shepherd. He has lived with his two humans, James & Libby, for 18 months.

Day 24 Update – plodding along

I’m a little bit lost for words today because I’m not really sure how things are going.  Last Wednesday was a really good day.  I thought we had turned a corner but on Thursday he went a bit down hill again.  Maybe he overdid the walk on Wednesday.  He was more lethargic and there was a small bleed in his wound.  We completely freaked out because the last time he had a bleed it was a serious complication.  The vet reassured us that it doesn’t look to serious, so we are back to keeping him quiet, changing his dressings and hand feeding the Fluffy Prince.

There’s a section of his stitches that is starting to look infected.  I have no idea how because he’s been taking antibiotics since the original operation and apart from cleaning, we are putting antibiotic cream on the site.   We’re scared of the skin breaking down but trying not to panic.  He’s over it and wishes we would leave him alone.

A slightly wary Badger looks up at the camera

Badger looking up at me sweetly, hoping for a treat.

The one positive from Prince Badgington’s perspective is that we’re putting yoghurt on his breakfast as a probiotic to help his gut bacteria.  He doesn’t care why, just says “Keep the yoghurt coming!”

Ok, good news is your vet doesn’t think you need to be concerned. That is GREAT! I can’t blame you for being so worried, this has been one heck of a tough recovery. But as you noticed, Badger isn’t worried and says “Hey I love the new food, keep it up!” Do your best to focus on how he is rolling with this like a duck in the water. You can do it too!

And whatever you do, don’t beat yourself up. You are doing as awesome as anyone can under the circumstances. None of this is because of anything you did, it’s just one of those crappy things that occasionally happens. Stay strong for Badger and your sanity, that happy corner is just up yonder 😉

Thanks Jerry. Everything seems surreal right now!

Your love and devotion come shining through and we all are sending our love and pawsitive energy to help support you, while you support your Yogurt loving boy❤
No one could do more than you are. You are not giving up on him and neither is he!!!
Wonder if the Vet thinks changing the antibiotic would help. I’m sure Mr B has had a culture to identity the best antibiotic. Double check just in case.
The Fluffy Prince has had to lounge around for so,long, I’m sure his muscl are a bit weak. Once you get passed this, he will get his strength back and Rehab will be very beneficial then.
Keep us posted…and always with pictures of his cute self!😎
    Hugs

Thanks Sally. I’m actually looking forward to his check up this week. Hoping she can point us in the right direction.

Hi! I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time. Recovery is a bumpy road, but try to focus on the vet’s opinion – if he told you it doesn’t look serious, try to hold that thought in mind (while, of course, keeping an eye out for any changes).
I have a tripawd too, a cat, and I got really worried during the recovery because he ate absolutely nothing for more than two weeks, and the few times he tried, he threw up. It was scary, but he’s absolutely fine now, and happy as ever.
Having a good energy around Badger will also help him. It’s much better that you speak to him in a happy tone, and get his mood up in any way you can. It seems silly, but it can do wonders for recovery. Keep strong! Feel free to message me on Twitter if you need to vent. ♡

I hope your cat is doing better now. x

I’m so sorry this has been such a rough recovery for you guys. It sounds like B’s surgery has been much more extensive than most of our own tripawd dogs with his pelvis being included in the procedure. But it sounds like you guys are doing a great job as parents helping him recover. We’re thinking of you and sending puppy kisses to Mr B from Oregon.

Thanks Heather. I’ll pass on the puppy kisses. 🙂

Oh Badger, my heart is sad for you & your “parents”. You must try to stay strong & focused so your body can heal. My boy Hobo had to re-learn everything after getting hit by a vehicle & overcome not only an amputation but a severe brain injury as well. We had many changes in our lives after that but Hobo was a tough old boy & we had such love for each other. Many years after Hobos passing, another tri-pawed has entered our hearts & home. Leonard has a whole different set of issues but we love him as he is. Please be strong & stay on the path to recovery. You are loved.
