An Australian Shepherd recovering from Myxosarcoma. Badger (or “Mr B”) is a 9 year old Aussie Shepherd. He has lived with his two humans, James & Libby, for 18 months.

Day 21: Curly Boy

It’s now been three weeks since Badger’s original operation and we feel like we are making slow progress.  He is still sleeping a lot of the time but his appetitie is ok and he’s happier to be patted and scratched.  In the past couple of days he would go to the toilet then head straight back inside.  Today he was happy to explore a little further.

The video was taken about half way through his walk (about 100 metres).  Up until this point he was walking well but then his body started doing “the curl.”  I now think that it’s due to tiredness and possibly a bit of pain.  He was better again after a short rest.

Awww baby Badger you are such a sweetie.

When I saw the title of this post I thought that you were going to talk about how his fur was growing in curly…now I get it.

Yeah I think you are spot on in your guess about the cause. It appears to me that Badger isn’t putting any weight on that back leg. I don’t know for sure but that’s what my non-vet eyes are seeing. As for the curl, yeah, we call it the “Crab Walk” around here and when our Wyatt does it, it’s typically when he’s hurting.

I know you’re in Australia but I’m wondering if the physio therapist Down Under or even ones here in the US will do phone consults with you? I know the founder of Wizard of Paws does phone consults. She’s awesome, literally wrote the book on canine physio and even has a downloadable DIY course, Fitness for the Tripod Dog. Before downloading it, I think it’s worth a try to contact her if you can’t find anyone nearby.

Sorry – thought I’d replied to this.
We will definitely look into physio but at the moment that seems a little way down the track. I am more aware of keeping his pain under control though, so thank you.
And his fur it growing back – yay. <3
